If the NHS is to become an employer of excellence and improve the services it provides to both men and women, a commitment to policies and practices that support gender equality is essential. This relates to both gender and gender identification.
Gender Equality Duty
The new gender equality duty came into effect on the 6 April 2007. The duty requires organisations to develop a gender equality scheme by no later than 30 April 2007. NHS organisations will also be required to address the causes of any gender pay gap and conduct gender equality impact assessments.
Transgender guidance
The Gender Recognition Act came into effect in April 2005. This page outlines the act and implications for employers. The new Gender Equality Duty also includes specific guidance on transgender issues, which employers should refer to.
Work and Families Act 2006
New regulations came into force on 1st October 2006 which affect the rights and responsibilities of both employers and employees in respect of maternity, paternity and adoption leave for children adopted or born after 1 April 2007.
