NHS Employers is working with NHS organisations to strengthen our work on the race equality agenda.

To support employers we have produced:

  • A list of what organisations need to do to comply with the Race Relations Amendments Act 2000
  • A table highlighting the main sections of a Race Equality Scheme and what organisations need to do to demonstrate good practice.

Race Relations Amendment Act 2000
The Commission for Racial Equality has developed a Code of Practice which relates to all public authorities covered by the legislation. We recommend using this list together with the Code of Practice. The legislation is divided into two parts, the General Duty and the Specific Duty. NHS organisations are required to cover both parts.

Legal guidance on RES
There is no specific guidance from the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) for newly formed or merged organisations, but employers should take a fairly robust view on this. Race Equality Schemes
We have produced a table highlighting the main sections of a Race Equality Scheme and what organisations need to do to demonstrate good practice. We have also provided links to some Race Equality Schemes, which have been produced by five of our Positively Diverse Lead Sites.
