Key issues
Public Accounts Committee report
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) published its report into pay modernisation and the General Medical Services (GMS) contract last week. Although the report raised several issues, NHS Employers has already addressed some of these with changes to the contract. In 2006, we made significant changes that resulted in substantial financial savings and improved patient services. In addition, earlier this year, we provided incentives for practices to provide additional appointment times which increased access for patients. (13 October 2008)

NHS staff survey update
More than 250,000 NHS staff are being asked their views on working in the NHS through the NHS staff survey, which should have been distributed in all NHS trusts at the start of October. This year all trusts are required to conduct the survey. Staff in all sectors and roles in the NHS are being encouraged to give their views. Information and guidance on how to conduct the survey, changes since the 2007 survey, and how the survey can be used to monitor and improve your trusts' performance is available on the National NHS Staff Survey Advice Centre website. NHS Revalidation Support Team announced
The Department of Health has announced the formation of the NHS Revalidation Support Team (RST) to help with the implementation of revalidation of all doctors in England. This will have significant implications for employers and we look forward to working with the RST and others to ensure that the design and delivery of revalidation systems locally fully meets the needs of employers. New identity card for foreign nationals unveiled
From 25 November 2008, the UK Border Agency (UKBA) will begin to issue new UK identity cards to foreign nationals to prove their identity and immigration status. The introduction of the card supports the points-based immigration system by making it easier for employers to check an individual's entitlement to live and work in the UK. (29 September 2008)
