Gill Bellord says it is time to refresh the GP contract and the awards for clinical excellence to strengthen performance management and incentivise excellence.

Responding to the Public Accounts Committee report published today (2 July) called ‘Department of Health: managing NHS hospital consultants’, Gill Bellorddirector of employment relations and reward at the NHS Employers organisation, said:

“The PAC report raises some important issues about care for patients which are of increasing concern. It's ten years since this contract was introduced and we have begun to talk to the British Medical Association about changes needed to support the employment of consultants going forward.

“It is time to refresh the contract and the awards for clinical excellence to strengthen performance management and incentivise excellence.”
