NHS Employers responds to launch of nationwide public flu vaccination campaign

The organiser of flu fighter, NHS Employers, has welcomed today’s (6 October) launch of a nationwide public flu vaccination campaign by Public Health England.
flu fighter is the annual campaign to continue increasing the number of NHS staff who get vaccinated, and is underway in NHS trusts throughout England and Wales. Ruth Warden, assistant director of employment services at NHS Employers which runs flu fighter, said:
“Flu vaccinations are safe and effective, so we wholeheartedly endorse Public Health England’s campaign in encouraging anyone from vulnerable groups to have one. Our own flu fighter campaign has helped 175,000 more NHS staff to be vaccinated since four years ago, which also protects the public by keeping staff healthy and keeping flu out of the NHS.
“More than a million people use the NHS every 36 hours, many of whom are frail or otherwise vulnerable to flu, and these patients should be reassured that over half of all frontline NHS staff now choose to be vaccinated – a number that increases every year. Creative and inspiring local flu fighter activities are a huge part of this success in vaccinating NHS staff.”

  • The flu fighter campaign, now in its fourth year and run by NHS Employers, last month (September) launched a wide range of free, tried-and-tested support and fully updated campaign materials which will continue throughout the flu season.
  • Organisations throughout the NHS are now using this support to run flu fighter activities locally, promoting the importance of the flu vaccination to staff and helping them to access vaccinations conveniently. Last year flu fighter helped the NHS to vaccinate 5,000 staff per day, for a total of 534,090 (54.8 per cent) frontline NHS staff. This was up from 359,080 (34.7 per cent) in 2010/11, the flu season before the campaign began. The vaccinations are an important part of this year’s winter planning and can help save lives by keeping the workforce healthy and protecting vulnerable patients.
  • This year flu fighter is sharing an improved, wider range of case studies to inspire and inform a greater range of NHS teams and organisations.   • NHS Employers has expanded its use of social media to increasingly embed #flufighter in flu conversations across the Twitter network.
