In response to the BMA Junior Doctors’ Committee decision to strike, Danny Mortimer, Chief Executive, NHS Employers, said:

“Deciding to take strike action is disappointing, disruptive and damaging for the NHS. It will impact on thousands of NHS patients and their families who will now have their appointments postponed, surgery rearranged and clinics closed.

“Significant progress had been made during our recent talks and their refusal to discuss our latest offer, which includes additional reassurances on safeguards on working hours specifically requested by the BMA, in favour of taking strike action will set back the progress we had made. Our priority now is to work with employers in the NHS to make sure they take action to minimise the disruption to patients that this BMA action will cause.”
