The issuing of mandates today (15 October) follows Heads of Terms being agreed with the British Medical Association (BMA) for renegotiation of the consultants' contract and for negotiations to achieve a new contract for doctors and dentists in training, including GP trainees. The Department of Health have now issued formal mandates for both contracts which set out the parameters for joint negotiations.
Negotiations will begin today and will cover:
- For consultants - amendments to the current consultant contract in England and Northern Ireland and to the Clinical Excellence Awards scheme.
- For junior doctors and dentists - the design of a new contract, including key issues such as working hours, pay, quality of life and training.
Commenting in a press statement, Dean Royles described the mandate as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to refocus doctors’ terms and conditions onto better patient care.
