Safe staffing expectations and guidance issued

Nurses reading

01 / 4 / 2014 3.49pm

The guidance follows recommendations made in the Francis report about safe staffing, and guidance from the National Quality Board (NQB). In brief, expectations on trusts include:
  • Every trust's board is to receive and consider a report on staffing capability and capacity every six months, from June 2014
  • Every ward is to clearly display information about all staff present and planned on each shift
  • A monthly update on planned and actual staffing is to be considered by each board, and made available to the public.

Jane Cummings, Chief Nursing Officer for England, and Professor Sir Mike Richards, Chief Inspector of Hospitals CQC, have written to trust CEOs, Directors of Nursing and HR Directors introducing the guidance, and including answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) about it.

We are working with NHS England to ensure you are equipped with the right information and resources to implement these requirements, and will keep you updated via our bulletins and web pages.

Access the letter, guidance and FAQs on our safe staffing web page.
