NHS trusts will soon be embarking on the annual round of job planning for consultants and SAS doctors. NHS Employers and the British Medical Association (BMA) have agreed joint guidance on job planning, which provides a useful framework for doctors and managers to agree objectives-based, patient-focused job plans.
NHS Employers and the BMA have also been working on developing joint training to support the local job planning process. A pilot event was held earlier this year and the slides from the day are available for local use. Please note that these slides should not be used for commercial purposes or the content amended significantly without the authors’ agreement.
NHS Employers has also published new guidance Consultant job planning - supporting good practice. This new guidance highlights the key points from the joint training slides and what to consider when preparing for the job planning process.
Further information on job planning can also be found on our job planning handbook page, which includes:
- Setting the scene - purpose, context and planning
- Job planning tools - team planning, contractual flexibilities, local information
- Objective setting - guide to setting objectives, top tips, possible pitfalls.
