The European Commission has recently published a patient safety package highlighting how the Commission and EU countries are addressing the challenge of patient safety, with information on progress made since 2012 and identifying barriers to overcome as recommended in a Council Recommendation of 2009.

Of particular interest for NHS staff are the recommendations in the reports on education and training of health professionals and on reporting and learning systems for patient safety incidents across Europe. Each report is illustrated with examples and experience from 27 European countries, and complemented by a list of factors necessary for implementation.
