NHS Employers have commissioned a report on behalf of NHS England looking at the international research evidence on the links between staff and patient experience. Doctor Jeremy Dawson of Sheffield University Management School created the report, which builds on his previous work as part of a team, led by Professor Mike West that analysed results of the NHS staff survey.

The report demonstrates the evidence base across a range of studies from UK and elsewhere, to find that there are clear links between improved staff experience and better care for patients. Good HR practice and in particular staff engagement, should therefore be seen as integral to overall objectives for the NHS not a separate HR initiative.

You can read the full research report by visiting the resource page.

If there you have any queries on the issues raised in the paper feel free to contact Steven Weeks, policy manager at NHS Employers.

Most of the research studies referred to, can be found on our website or on request.
