Organisations have been busy using the new 'U' matrix to code the healthcare science workforce on the Electronic Staff Record, which was introduced last year.

The new coding arrangements are designed to ensure organisations have robust data, and so workforce planners are able to include healthcare science in the mainstream planning process along with other healthcare professions.

Progress so far

Regular monitoring of uptake demonstrates that 85 per cent of the old 'T' matrix codes have been transferred using the new system, however work needs to take place within some Local Education and Training Boards to ensure the exercise is completed in time for the 2014 Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) workforce census.

Professor Sue Hill, Chief Scientific Officer has cascaded this message to encourage full uptake.

Available guidance for employers

The HSCIC has produced some helpful guidance and other supporting materials and it is important the guidance is closely followed when selecting new occupation codes for posts. Download the HSCIC resources.
