More flexible rules around working time and rest breaks were the main points that the NHS European Office put forward in its meeting with employers from across the public sector in Europe. This is to make sure that good public services can be delivered whilst ensuring that staff get adequate rest
The commission listened to views from across the public sector and asked for concrete examples of how public services have been affected by the constraints of complying with the working time directive.
The European Office will supply the commission with evidence of the impact of some of the working time rules on health services in England in order to push the case for change. We intend to influence its thinking before they issue a public consultation on the future of European working time legislation in 2015.
