Public Health England has today reported that more than 340,000 frontline staff (36.8 per cent) have been vaccinated between 1 September and 31 October 2014, compared to 35 per cent in the same period of 2013. This means that 22,491 more staff have been vaccinated this year than in the same interval last year.

Here are some of the highlights from the figures:

  • 59 trusts have vaccinated over half of their staff already
  • 42 trusts have already exceeded the 2013/14 final average of 54.8 per cent
  • 3 trusts have vaccinated 75 per cent or more of their staff
  • 127 trusts have improved compared to the same period of 2013/14

The figures complement the statistics released from Public Health Wales last week, which also showed a strong start for flu vaccination uptake in Wales.

Danny Mortimer, chief executive of the NHS Employers organisation, said:

“This is an even stronger start than we had last year, when all records were broken and over half a million NHS staff were vaccinated. Every year more staff are choosing this safe, effective vaccination and they know it helps to protect them, their families and their patients.

Flu fighter (@NHSFlufighter) has continued to use social media to increase awareness of the campaign this year, successfully encouraging trusts to embed #flufighter in flu conversations across the Twitter network. The social media presence of the campaign continues to encourage feedback from employers and staff about the flu vaccination. Join us on Thursday 27th November 2014 at 8pm for our conversation on flu with @WeNurses.

We want to hear about your campaign! Tell us what you have done differently this year by emailing flufighter@nhsemployers.org. If you would like further support or guidance from flu fighter, please email us, or call 0844 334 5252.
