In December NHS Employers equality and diversity (E&D) focus is on human rights in the workplace. Throughout the month we'll be providing useful case studies and resources to help you have more confident conversations with staff about this often overlooked area of E&D.
Working with British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR) and Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) NHS Employers is helping NHS organisations to highlight this area of work and increase awareness about human rights issues in the workplace.
As a public sector worker, it's unlawful for your employer to violate your human rights under the European Convention on Human Rights. Many of the principles of the Human Rights Act are designed to protect workers within the workplace. For example, you have the right to a private and family life. So an employer who discriminates against a gay worker, for example, may be violating that worker's right to a private life.
Resources ranging from case studies to websites will all be available free of charge from the NHS Employers website.
