From 5 January 2015, all GP practices in England are free to register new patients who live outside their practice area, without the responsibility for providing home visits, if required.
- Patients will be able to apply to register with any participating GP practice away from home, for example near work – but if they need urgent care at home and can’t attend their usual practice, they can access a local service by ringing NHS111.
- The new arrangements are voluntary for GP practices and it may not always be appropriate for some people to be registered far away from home without the prospect of home visits from their practice. Practices have always been able to register patients who live outside their practice area but they had to provide home visits, if required – practices can still register this way too
