Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust becomes the first NHS organisation to achieve the number 1 spot on Stonewall's Top 100 Employers.
A total of 11 NHS organisations feature in the Top 100 including a community healthcare trust and ambulance organisation.
This is a great overall achievement for the NHS and reflects the excellent work within the service to make sure diversity and openness become valued and respected parts of everyday working life. It also resonates that more and more NHS trusts are now using and engaged with the Equality Delivery System (EDS2) assessment framework.
Danny Mortimer, chief executive of the NHS Employers organisation, said: "I am delighted at the leadership and vision that the NHS organisations recognised in the 2015 top 100 listing have shown. The NHS still has much to do in order to make it both a safe place for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people to both work and seek health and social care services. Endorsements like this from organisations like Stonewall will help to make this happen quicker.
We aspire for the NHS to be as diverse as the patients we care for and we know this helps us attract skilled, compassionate and caring employees. A diverse and inclusive working culture is critical for the future of the NHS. Having a culture where staff feel valued and respected for who they are helps LGBT staff have the confidence to raise ideas and concerns - including ones that could be crucial for safe patient care."
Ruth Hawkins, Chief Executive at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust said following the announcement that her organisation had topped the list "I am absolutely delighted to lead an organisation that has been named as Stonewall’s Employer of the Year for 2015. The Trust has an outstanding reputation for its proactive approach to all strands of equality and diversity and it is great to see this recognised in such a prestigious annual assessment.
