Dealing with concerns about doctors - GMC report published

25 / 2 / 2015 3.27pm

The General Medical Council (GMC) has published a report highlighting the feedback and results of its consultation into dealing with concerns about doctors.

The consultation ran between August and November 2014. It focused on actions needed around sanctions and the role of apologies and warnings - where there is an issue with a doctor putting patient safety or public confidence of doctors at risk.

The report is based on five main areas of concern in the consultation:

  • changes to GMC sanctions guidance
  • the role of insight and apology
  • changes to GMC guidance on suspension
  • giving patients a voice
  • changes to the GMC power to give warning.

The GMC plans to publish its new guidance on sanctions in August 2015.  The full report summarising the consultation responses can be found on the GMCs website.
