A new legal order on the use of financial incentives has been introduced by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

The order, which came into effect on 6 April 2015, prohibits organisations from offering clinicians incentives for referral of treatment to independent private facilities.

The General Medical Council (GMC) is writing to all licensed doctors in the UK and designated body organisations throughout April 2015 to advise them of this new order and remind them of their professional responsibility to avoid conflicts of interest. The GMC will also provide information on the CMA's guidance on financial arrangements and conflicts of interest.

The full report on the legal order can be found on the CMA website. Further information and the guidance on Financial and commercial arrangements and conflicts of interest’ is on the GMC website.
