Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England has announced that the work to ensure safe staffing will now be taken forward by Chief Nursing Officer, Jane Cummings.

NHS England plans to look at alternative ways of helping NHS providers achieve the right levels and skill-mix of staff as part of a wider programme of service improvement.

In 2013, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) was asked to produce guidelines on safe staffing in the NHS, following the report of the Francis Inquiry and Berwick Review into Patient Safety. Following Simon Stevens announcement at the NHS Confederation annual conference, NICE has been asked not to begin any new activity.

Further information

The two guidelines available for adult acute wards and maternity will remain in place. These can be accessed from our Safe staffing guidance web pages and will update this section as more information becomes available.
