New guidance for organisations that deliver medical education and training has been launched by The General Medical Council (GMC) and will come into effect on 1 January 2016.

Promoting excellence: standards for medical education and training promotes patient safety and fairness, putting them at the heart of any teaching, supervision and support given to medical students and doctors.

The new standards contain some significant requirements for employers as local education providers and will need to be closely reviewed locally by boards and all those involved in education such as training programme directors, directors of medical education and educational supervisors.

The standards were developed with the input of organisations and individuals involved in medical education and training following a public consultation in January 2015, which NHS Employers contributed to with employers' views

They replace current GMC standards set out in Tomorrows doctors and The trainee doctor aimed at medical students and postgraduate doctors in training.
