A new video has been developed by Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust which describes the Nursing and Midwifery Council's (NMC) revised code and how it can be used in practice.

The Code, Professional standard of practice and behaviour for nurses and midwives, which became effective on 31 March 2015, describes the professional standards that practising nurses and midwives must uphold in order to be registered in the UK.

Do your staff know about the code and how it links with revalidation?

The code is a key tool for nurses to refer to when considering their revalidation requirements. It includes four themes which act as a guide when reflecting on daily practice and a professional approach to work.

The code contains updated guidance on:

  • the use of social media
  • prescribing and medicine management
  • fundamentals of care
  • the duty of candour
  • taking emergency action
  • maintaining clear professional boundaries
  • raising concerns.

The video provides a useful overview of the code which can help communicate the revised Code to nursing and midwifery staff.

Further information

Further information on the code is available on our revalidation web pages and also on the NMC website which includes additional resources such as FAQs, slides, posters and more.
