How can ESR support recording employment checks?

The electronic staff record (ESR) central team has published a special edition on ESR news, which summarises the role of ESR and how it can support NHS organisations to fulfil the mandatory requirement to record all employment checks.  

The special edition covers:

  • business intelligence reporting
  • useful screenshots
  • links to guidance on Kbase.

NHS Employment Check standards

The standards were developed by NHS Employers, the Department of Health and employers in the NHS. They include checks that are required by law, ones that are Department of Health policy and ones that are required for access to the NHS care records service. The standards are mandatory for applicants to all NHS positions (prospective employees) and staff in ongoing NHS employment. This includes permanent staff, staff on fixed-term contracts, volunteers, students, trainees, contractors, highly mobile staff, temporary workers (including locum doctors), those working on a temporary staffing bank, and other workers supplied by an agency. Employers must record the outcome of all pre-employment and ongoing checks, using ESR.
