Under the option to give up protection exercise, eligible members of the 2008 section of the NHS Pension Scheme have until Wednesday 30 September to inform NHS Pensions on their decision to give up protection.

Members who are eligible will have received a letter from NHS Pensions direct to their home address informing them of their option. As an employer, you can support eligible employees by directing them to our resources that assist them in making their decision.

The option to give up protection exercise gives members of the 2008 section of the NHS Pension Scheme, with full or tapered protection, a one-off opportunity to move to the 2015 Scheme from 1 April 2015. This is because, for some members, the higher accrual rate in the 2015 Scheme could deliver a bigger pension at retirement than the 2008 section. There are approximately 40,000 eligible members who will already have received their personalised letters from NHS Pensions.
