The health secretary has today written to Dr Mark Porter, chair of the BMA, confirming that the government is happy for talks to commence between government officials, NHS Employers and the BMA on proposed reforms to the junior doctors’ contract using Acas conciliation services.

In the letter, which is now available to view on the Department of Health website, the health secretary also urges the BMA to postpone the planned industrial action which is due to start on Tuesday 1 December.

In response to the publication of today’s letter, Danny Mortimer, chief executive at NHS Employers, said:

“Employers across the NHS will welcome a return to discussions with the BMA, working with Acas conciliation services. I remain hopeful that through our joint endeavours we can end this dispute, and modernise the contracts for doctors whilst also addressing their concerns."
