Recruiting young people in Central Manchester

In the latest case study published as part of our ThinkFuture programme of work, Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) shares details of its successful nursing assistant pre-employment programme. 

The trust is committed to supporting the regeneration of the local community, including providing opportunities for young people. This case study outlines the steps CMFT has taken to create a comprehensive and well-structured process for potential new nursing assistants, including:

  • working in partnership with Skills for Health, The Manchester College and Jobcentre Plus
  • tailoring the recruitment and selection process for young people
  • providing classroom-based training and hospital-based experience
  • adapting the reference and Disclosure Barring Service processes
  • guaranteeing an interview for everyone who completes the programme.

The nursing assistant programme is one of the trust's most successful and has resulted in significant staff retention rates.
