The General Medical Council (GMC) has published an update on revalidation progress since its implementation in December 2012. They have successfully revalidated over 133,000 licensed doctors in this time, and expect to reach a total of around 150,000 by April 2016.

Audits of appraisal systems in England held in 2011 and again in 2015, show that rates of appraisals have improved a great deal:

  • GPs – from 79 per cent in 2011, to 93.2 per cent in 2015
  • Hospital Consultants – from 64.1 per cent in 2011, to 87.3 per cent in 2015
  • SAS Doctors – from 35.6 per cent in 2011, to 83.9 per cent in 2015.
Feedback from employers so far is very positive, with almost 40 per cent of employers saying that revalidation is helping them to identify concerns about doctors earlier, which enables them to take remedial action quickly.

The full press release can be found on the GMC's website. You can find further information on revalidation on our web pages.
