Monitor and the NHS Trust Development Authority (TDA) have announced that from 1 February 2016 the amount of money that NHS trusts can pay per hour for agency staff will be reduced.

They also announced that from 1 April 2016 the rules around procurement through approved frameworks will be extended to all staff groups.

In an update on the implementation of the agency price caps, Monitor and the TDA have outlined the next steps to reduce agency spend, these include:

  • the agency price caps will reduce on the 1 February, as previously proposed
  • a requirement that from 1 April 2016 agency procurement for all staff groups is via frameworks approved by Monitor and the TDA
  • framework suppliers have to ensure their prices are at or below the rates set by NHS Improvement
  • compliance with all the agency rules will be a core condition of the sustainability and transformation fund for trusts.

A summary of the information sent to chief executives on the 15 January 2016 is available to download. You can also find more information and guidance about the price caps and rules for agency staff working in the NHS.
