Board briefing on apprenticeship policy changes

Meeting for finance

18 / 3 / 2016 9.38am

NHS Employers has produced a briefing for boards to provide an overview of key policy changes around apprenticeships, including the apprenticeship levy and public sector apprenticeship targets.

HR directors may wish to bring this briefing to the attention of their chief executives, so that they can make their board members aware of the impact of these changes.

The briefing suggests actions that boards may wish to take to implement and obtain the maximum benefit from these policy changes, as well as a set of key questions for boards to consider.

Key points

  • The apprenticeship levy, payable from April 2017, will be charged at 0.5% of the total pay bill.
  • Apprenticeship targets will apply to each public sector organisation and are proposed at 2.3% of headcount.
