In an open letter released today, Dr Mike Durkin, NHS national director for patient safety, has outlined his belief that the new junior doctor contract is safe for patients.

In the letter, Dr Durkin clearly sets out his views on the contract and its implication for patients. He says: "Can it really be fair to label the new contract as ‘unsafe’ when it clearly contains a number of measures that will directly improve the safety of care for patients, putting right some serious flaws in the current contract that posed risks to patient safety?"
