17 / 3 / 2016 Midday
The 2016 flu fighter Cymru awards recognise the incredible effort of flu teams across Wales. This year, there was an extra reason for celebrating as teams reached the highest ever flu vaccination uptake of frontline staff in Wales. The standard of this year's entries were exceptional in their achievements and efforts to protect not only the staff, but also families and patients too.
Congratulations to the winners!
flu fighter Cymru champion – Sharon from Powys Teaching Health Board
Sharon monitors flu uptake and keeps managers informed of the figures, ensures employees in at risk groups are contacted directly and is as a real support to the team.
#flufighterCymru - digital and social media – Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board
This communications team focused on sharing information and personal stories. Staff explained how flu affected them, and shared experiences of patients who are vulnerable to flu and its complications.
Most innovative flu fighter Cymru campaign - Hywel Dda University Health Board
This team created an innovative and bespoke campaign using real life flu advocates, along with striking, powerful and emotive images. The team raised awareness by creating messages that appealed to the professionalism of staff, and focused on patient protection and infection prevention.
Most improved flu fighter Cymru campaign - Public Health Wales staff flu vaccination team
They focused on improving the promotion of, and knowledge about, the flu vaccination, provision of vaccination and data collection. Personalised invitations offering vaccinations were sent to all staff and workplace vaccination sessions were offered in more locations than in previous seasons.
Best flu fighter Cymru team - Velindre NHS Trust
Additional members were recruited to ensure that more staff were able to get vaccinated. They held vaccination sessions in a variety of venues and tried to use all available resources. A free cup of tea was also offered as a thank you to those getting the vaccine! The team was also innovative, and held flu fighting Fridays, used emails to advertise the campaign, generated media clips and parodies to maintain enthusiasm.
Well done and thank you to the winners, nominees and organisations who work year on year to encourage staff to have the flu vaccination.
