NHS Employers responds to call for evidence on closed recruitment practices

We have responded on behalf of employers to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) call for evidence about closed recruitment practices in the public sector.

The response has been informed by engagement with employers, who have told us that at certain times or for particular roles they will use internal or closed recruitment practices, combined with strategies to attract and develop talent from outside the organisation and the sector.  

We are keen to make sure the valuable role that internal recruitment has for employers in the NHS is understood. In our response we have provided examples of certain times or particular roles where such practices might be adopted. 

Overall, our response makes clear that workforce policy, including policy around recruitment, must support the NHS to recruit, retain and develop a skilled workforce that is fully equipped to deliver quality patient care. Flexibility for organisations to determine their own local recruitment strategies is vital in order to address individual recruitment and retention challenges.
