Ill health retirement benefits are an integral part of the NHS Pension Scheme. However, it was recognised that an integrated approach to managing ill health retirements was needed, so the current arrangements are being reviewed alongside arrangements for injury benefit and managing sickness absence.
As ill health retirement is a key component of the main pension scheme, arrangements for this need to be in place by April 2008. No such constraints exist for the NHS Injury Benefits Scheme. The review partners will put together a set of jointly agreed proposals and recommendations for consultation, and staff and employers will be given the chance t respond.
