Salaried dentists' contract

NHS Employers and the British Dental Association (BDA) have announced a successful outcome to the BDA ballot on proposals to modernise the salaried dentists' contract. This page contains the summary agreement, supporting information and next steps.

More details on implementation dates for both existing and new salaried dentists will follow. Primary Care Contracting will also be running a number of implementation events for trusts and will be contacting organisations direct about these.

Key dates for implementation

Work is now underway to support trusts through implementation and the following key milestones:

  • From January 2008 - trusts start to prepare to implement the new contract
  • By 1 April 2008 - it is anticipated that existing staff will have moved to the new contract by this date but it is expected that trusts will move staff to the new contract as soon as they can. Any increase in pay as a result of staff moving to the new contract will be backdated to 1 June 2007
  • On or after 4 February 2008 - any new staff will start on the new contract

The new contract

The contract includes a new structure for pay and career development to deliver the changes within Creating the Future - Modernising Careers for Salaried Dentists in Primary Care.

The key elements are:

  • A new single pay spine with three competency pay bands covering the following groups: dentists, senior dentists, specialist dentists and managerial dentists
  • Each pay band is split into six pay points and the dentist will need to demonstrate the competencies for the post to move through the band
  • The new pay structure is supported by mandatory annual appraisals and job planning to support salaried dentists' career development

The new contract will replace the current terms and conditions.
