NHS Pension Scheme

Changes to the NHS Pension Scheme in England and Wales were introduced on 1 April 2008.

Crowd of people

The changes, agreed by NHS Employers and the NHS trade unions, are designed to ensure that the NHS Pension Scheme continues to meet the needs of a modern NHS and its staff, while at the same time being sustainable in the longer term. NHS Employers has produced a factsheet about the revised NHS Pension Scheme.

This section of the NHS Employers website provides information on:

  • The NHS Pension Choice exercise
The strategic and operational implications of the NHS Pension Choice exercise for employers. The Choice exercise begins in January 2010, giving members of the 1995 section of the NHS Pension Scheme the opportunity to move to the new 2008 section.
  • The Ageing Workforce
Our work on age diversity concentrates on legislation and on the strategic workforce implications of an ageing workforce. These pages  provide briefings, support materials and information so that healthcare organisations can develop age-friendly policies and practices. Age-friendly policies and practices are a key consideration for employers during the NHS Pension Choice exercise.
  • NHS Pension Scheme changes 1 April 2008
Information for employers on changes made to the NHS Pension Scheme for both new and existing members.
  • Information for staff
If you are a member of staff, you can find details about all the changes brought into effect on 1 April 2008 on the NHS Pensions website. This includes factsheets for all staff as well as people who have left the scheme, NHS pensioners and dependents. NHS Pensions has also developed specific materials to support members during the NHS Pension Choice exercise.

If you are working in the NHS and would like to join the NHS Pension Scheme, please speak to your local pensions officer, payroll officer or HR department.
