Induction programmes

NHS Employers has developed induction programmes and collected examples of other organisations' programmes to be shared across the NHS.

A sound and comprehensive induction must be in place for all internationally recruited professions. This ensures that staff recruited from overseas are able to settle into their new environment as quickly as possible. It helps raise confidence and provides a familiarity with the practices of the NHS.

An induction must cover the trust itself and its procedures, as well as a more general induction into living in England.

Consultants and GPs
To enable new consultants and GPs to practise effectively and confidently from the start, it is essential they have a clear understanding of their professional role and feel comfortable with their personal or family circumstances. A well-planned and relevant induction programme will help to ensure they feel ready for their new position.

Dentists
This induction programme for dentists was produced by the Dental Practice Board, in collaboration with the North and East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire Strategic Health Authority.

Nurses
This induction programme for nurses was produced by Aintree Hospitals NHS Trust. The induction programme was delivered by the trust's clinical nurse educator. The job description and person specification for this role is here for trusts to use and adapt.
