Flexible careers and returner schemes

The budget and management of the Flexible Careers and Returner schemes for GPs and hospital doctors for 2005/06 has been under review. The aim is to devolve the management and funding of the schemes to Strategic Health Authorities.

The Department of Health has confirmed the in-year allocations of £12 million for both schemes. A breakdown of allocations is available in this section: GP scheme and hospital doctors scheme. This is based on the number of hospital doctors and GPs currently on the Flexible Careers and Returner scheme.

In future Strategic Health Authorities will be responsible for developing the future arrangements of the scheme in their area.

Any queries relating to the schemes apart from about financial implications should go NHS Employers at recruitmentandretention@nhsemployers.org
