Temporary staffing

Helping NHS trusts to manage their temporary staffing is one of the key priorities for NHS Employers and we will be looking for ways to support trusts in reducing their reliance on temporary nursing staff.

Agency spend in the NHS has increased threefold between the years1996/97 and 2003/04 to one and a half billion pounds - over 5 per cent of the NHS pay bill compared with 3 per cent in 1996/97. If we could bring spending back to 1996/97 levels we would potentially save one billion pounds on agency costs.
