The large scale workforce change (LSWC) team has worked with NHS organisations to deliver solutions to workforce problems, to help build capacity and increase productivity.
LSWC programmes deliver measured improvements through the creation and management of national learning and sharing networks. Working together with NHS organisations in this way means good ideas and good practice are developed, implemented and shared in ways that deliver measurable benefits to both patients and NHS staff.
Improved workforce planning and productivity is the focus for all LSWC programmes. The programmes work by reviewing and redesigning systems and processes and/or redesigning or extending existing roles. This approach supports the creation of an adaptable and flexible workforce that is needed to deliver today's healthcare services.
Programmes in 2007/08 included:
- The consultant contract programme which supported trusts and consultants in identifying, describing and delivering service improvements through effective implementation of the consultant contract.
- Improving productivity and information governance work programme. This programme supported NHS organisations to take the work already done by NHS Connecting for Health and Electronic Staff Record to integrate HR and Registration Authority processes, and apply it to their local situation to improve workforce productivity and information governance.

During 2006/07, the team will deliver four large-scale workforce change programmes, with each engaging up to 60 trusts.
