Regulation and standards

NHS Employers delivers various programmes of work to help employers ensure they have the right staff, with the appropriate qualifications and values, to work in the NHS. You can find out more, including who to contact for further information within the sections below.

NHS Employment Check Standards - these standards, which were last updated in July 2013, outline the employment checks employers are required to carry out before appointing staff into the NHS, across England.

Language competency guidance - NHS staff require a certain level of linguistic and English language skills to enable them to undertake their role effectively and safely. Here you can download good practice guidance and some helpful Q&A.
