NHS Employers and PSNC have published guidance for the New Medicine Service (NMS).

This version of the guidance was published in December 2013. A resource for community pharmacists and commissioners, it includes information that will help to ensure the NMS is delivered and monitored successfully, such as contractor requirements and record keeping and reporting arrangements. There are also a number of helpful templates and information on the payment structure.

The New Medicine service specification was published in 2011 and updated in 2013 to reflect the new NHS commissioning structures.

On 23 July 2012, the Department of Health published The Pharmaceutical Services (Advanced and Enhanced Services) (England) Directions 2012. These included several minor changes relating to the NMS:

Direction 5(4) has been added. This clarifies that a patient can have:

(a) more than one MUR service consultation in a period of 12 months, or

(b) an MUR service within six months of an NMS consultation

if they have been discharged from hospital and if they had changes made to the drugs they are taking while they were in hospital.

Direction 7(1)(e) has been amended to clarify that patients who are eligible for the NMS should have been prescribed a particular NMS medicine for the medical condition or therapy in relation to which the NMS medicine is listed in Schedule 2.

Please note that the 2012 Directions have since been superseded by the Pharmaceutical Services (Advanced and Enhanced Services) (England) Directions 2013. Directions 5(4) and 7(1)(e) continue to apply.
