What will the certificate do?

It will show the consultant is eligible for honorary, short-term work in other NHS trusts and hospitals without additional paperwork.

The certificate aims to provide support to trusts’ services in the form of specialist expertise for the benefit of patients and to facilitate network arrangements between trusts and hospitals.

It is intended that the visiting consultant will be invited by the hosting trust and work under appropriate supervision and within the hosting trust’s operational governance arrangements for the agreed duration.

The authority for getting clearance to invite a consultant to work on a short-term basis lies with the medical director of the hosting trust, or other consultants nominated by the chief executive (known as nominated persons).
