Increasing efficiency in the transfer of junior doctors between trusts was the initial aim of the Streamlining Programme. Work on this programme stream has resulted in the development of an interface between The London Deanery’s empower system and electronic staff record (ESR), to ensure both trainees and their allocated trusts have accurate, timely information about the rotation.
- Getting 39 London trusts to agree to do the same thing to benefit all of them was a major milestone in itself. This served to prove the power of collective working and was the foundation of further work.
- Over 10,000 junior doctor rotations each year are now created automatically in ESR, which means no more manual re-entering of rotation data and this eliminated the inevitable human errors. It is estimated that 1,700 man hours of data entry has been saved each year.
- During 2013, 94 per cent of transfers were automated, allowing trusts to access accurate, timely information about which junior doctor was coming to their trust.
