Through the Armed Forces Covenant, NHS organisations have the opportunity to build their reputation as an Armed Forces friendly employer while growing links with their local units and support organisations.
The covenant also allows a more open and honest relationship between the Ministry of Defence, reservists and their employers. This ensures that the needs of companies are considered alongside defence.
When signing the Armed Forces Covenant, your organisation agrees to two principles:
- no member of the Armed Forces community should face disadvantage in the provision of public and commercial services compared to any other citizen
- in some circumstances special treatment may be appropriate, especially for the injured or bereaved.
Each organisation is also encouraged to offer support in a way most appropriate to their situation and capacity, with the pledge document including a menu of options for them to sign up to. This menu covers employment support for veterans, reservists, service spouses and partners, as well as support for cadet units, Armed Forces Day, and discounts for the Armed Forces community.
The Armed Forces Covenant is just one part of the support package that trusts can offer reservist employees, you can also be nominated for an Employer Recognition Scheme award and sign up to be an NHS Reserve Forces Champion.
