The service leaver

A service leaver is the term used for someone who is transitioning or has left the Armed Forces. Veterans are defined as anyone that has served for at least one day on any of the three Armed Forces - Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, as a regular or a reserve.

Access the potential

By making your commitment to support Step into health you can unlock the potential from the Armed Forces community. There are around one million working age veterans currently living in the UK with 120,000 currently seeking employment. With a further 16,000 men and women leaving the UK Armed Forces each year, there is a wide selection of people that might not be considered for the NHS workforce in your local area.

Ex-forces employees bring to the workforce commitment, values aligned to the NHS, integrity and transferable skills that can help with managing adapting situations. Coming from a variety of background areas within the military including logistics, recruitment, IT and clinical roles, this can easily be transitioned into the variety of non-clinical roles found within the NHS.

Step into Health alumni

We are currently setting up a Step into Health alumni network of people that have been through the programme. We will be releasing a series of blogs to share their experiences of the transition and where they are now.

Palmer and Kevin have both come through the programme and have this to say:

“Step into Health provides excellent experience seeing what the NHS has to offer, both professionally and personally. It gives you a pathway and someone to guide you in finding an area of work you’ll enjoy. As military, we are excellent at knowing what we don’t want to do, but have little knowledge of knowing what we do want to do. The programme guides and facilitates work placements to suit you, and helps find an area you’ll continue to enjoy working in.” - Palmer

“The support I’ve had from people at Northumbria really has been life changing.  It has turned my life around completely. Since starting on my work placement programme, I feel like doors are starting to open for me and I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.  I’m looking forward starting a second work placement with Northumbria shortly.” - Kevin
