Research has shown that when supportive or good leadership and management takes place organisations and people flourish. Research also shows that leaders who demonstrate supportive behaviour also have staff groups that are more engaged, have less sickness absence and workplace issues and deliver high levels of performance. Line managers have a significant impact on day-to-day wellbeing at work.

- providing training to all their line managers to help them support their staff’s health and wellbeing.
Like other skills, line management behaviours can be developed. In order for this to happen it is important that both time and resources are available. The provision of management training programme forms part of the core offer.
Organisations may want to build on their own current practice in this area. A core line manager training offer will be developed to enable line managers to receive high impact, effective, core training that is robustly evaluated.
This will be delivered as a train the trainer package to enable maximum reach, a more consistent approach to line manager training across the NHS, and maximum impact.
