Through an increased drive on efficiency and productivity in HR, streamlining creates a better experience for NHS staff changing jobs or rotating across the health system. Most of the value of streamlining comes from better staff experience but it additionally it has cost savings. NHS Wales wanted to ensure that its streamlining process was well supported with the right financial approach.
So that NHS Wales could understand the opportunity costing in changing the flow and value of work from one process to another, a combination of economic costing models and finance costing models were used. To simplify this process they developed a new costing model with public health Professor Nick Rich.
The results so far have been positive, with more staff engaged, higher compliance and limited variation. There have also been significant opportunity savings, with £134,000 saved over the past 12 months from organisations that have submitted their data. NHS Wales can now use its resources better, looking at high-risk areas and allow high-level training.
