In this case study Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT), showcases how it successfully introduced a virtual junior doctor forum as a way to engage junior doctors during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to COVID-19, the trust had a junior doctors forum (JDF) and meetings were held on the main hospital campus. Despite a number of different initiatives, attendance and engagement with the JDF was very disappointing. When the COVID-19 pandemic started, it required a rapid junior doctor response with 400 GSTT doctors redeployed to work in priority areas.
Given the speed and scale of the COVID-19 response, it became clear the trust needed a new way to engage with the junior doctors and it had to be done quickly and efficiently.
The case study sets out the steps the trust took to provide a forum for junior doctor engagement, to develop services, working conditions and education and training.
