Medical trainees in academic placement

COVID-19 sources of external staffing

There are approximately 2,200 medical trainees in academic placements who are not currently working clinically as their main role, but many will have up-to-date clinical knowledge and skills, and all represent an extremely valuable resource.

Work is underway, led by Health Education England (HEE) and managed regionally, to bring these trainees back into the service to provide support as part of our response to, and management of COVID-19.

These trainees represent a potentially mobile resource as they are not currently attached to any specific setting and as such can potentially be used, within reason, to respond to areas of particular demand. HEE will oversee the allocation and logistical management of these trainees working with NHS England and NHS Improvement regional teams.

Further information can be found on the HEE website.

The Royal College of Physicians has published dated guidance for clinical academics who wish to return to clinical practice.
