Lone worker guidance (March 2018)
These two guidance documents highlight the importance of protecting lone workers and provide advice for managers on their legal duties. They also outline the steps that staff can take to protect themselves and the importance of reporting incidents. The guides can be used to support local initiatives around lone working and the roll out and implementation of lone worker alarms and associated training. They include some quick questions to act as checklist to ensure that the necessary protections and control measures are in place.

Domestic violence support (November 2017)
Employers have a legal obligation to assess any risk and to support the health, safety and wellness of their employees. In line with the 16 Days of Action Against Domestic Violence Campaign which ran from 25 November through to 10 December 2017, HSWPG produced two new resources to help you support your employees who may suffer domestic violence and help protect your staff.
Guidelines on prevention and management of sickness absence (updated April 2017)
The guidelines on prevention and management of sickness absence, updated in April 2017, outline the key principles that NHS organisations should follow to prevent and manage sickness absence as well as signposting readers to sources of further information. The 2009 Boorman Review estimates that absence could be cut by a third, meaning a cost reduction of £555 million per annum if interventions to prevent and manage sickness absence are implemented effectively.
Working longer in the NHS
This is a first step to help employers implement recommendations seven and ten of the working longer review, relating to the health, safety and wellbeing of older workers. The occupational health, safety and wellbeing indicators from the working longer group’s organisational readiness checklist have been used to define ‘what good looks like’ and provide further support and signposts around implementation. The guidance has been split into two sections in line with the original review recommendations.
Bullying in the NHS (June 2016)
HSWPG recognises that bullying can have a detrimental effect on an individual’s overall health and wellbeing. Therefore the partnership group wishes to support every NHS organisation in building a culture so that every employee can work in an environment free from fear of intimidating behaviour. HSWPG has put together information and resources to support organisations in taking a more proactive stance against bullying. This guide has been developed to help individuals understand and manage the risks from sharps injuries. Sharps injuries are a well-known risk to healthcare workers and may result in blood-borne viruses such as HIV or hepatitis B and C.
HSWPG welcomes the Health and Safety Executive's report on the prevention and management of sharps injuries: inspection of NHS organisations' report and the work of the Health and Safety Executive in enforcing the Sharps Regulations, which are designed to help keep NHS staff safe from sharps injuries. The report highlighted a number of potential pitfalls, but also gave examples of good practice, in applying the regulations. It is important that all trusts ensure that they comply with the regulations and that their sharps prevention strategy is embedded into their health and safety management systems.

The importance of effective partnership working on health, safety and wellbeing (May 2014)
The guidance includes information on workplace inspections, the functions of a safety representative, what an effective health and safety committee looks like and the legal requirements to consult on health and safety matters. There are useful checklists throughout the guidance so you can see what progress your organisation is making and what needs to be done, as well as a short case study.
Workplace Health and Safety Standards (July 2013)
This is an updated version of the workplace health and safety standards document in July 2013. The standards aim to help organisations comply with health and safety law by pulling together legal requirements and good practice. They provide practical pointers and signposts for meeting appropriate standards in key areas of workplace health and safety.
This document includes revised chapters on health and safety management systems (to reflect the Health and Safety Executive's Plan, Do, Check, Act process); lone working and an updated chapter on sharps injuries reflecting the new health and safety (sharps instruments in healthcare) regulations 2013 as well as updated links and signposts to all relevant information.
